11. NEW!
It had to happen!
I didn’t really like the BMW OEM rear spoiler as much as I wanted to.
From the rear it's OK, from the side it looks like it's an afterthought - which
it was.
So why bother with a spoiler
at all?
The addition of
the CSi "diffuser" on later cars visually lowers the rear of the car from the
original design. This is much more pronounced in lighter cloured cars - such
as mine. When I borrowed a rear spoiler to try, it moved the "visual centre"
back up to where it started. Many don't agree with this view
-
but
you need to have seen the same car
with and
without
the
spoiler, in real life, not photos, to really appreciate what I mean. Also
we are in to personal preference here - everyone who thinks pink is the best
colour
for
their 8 is
right
- if it makes them happy - everyone who thinks auto is best
is right if it suits
them, everyone who thinks manual is best is right, if it suits them. Which
is why I'm bemused by comments such as "Which is the best colour?"
Answer?
I’ve just bought a complete (with lights, etc, etc) spare boot lid for £50.
It’s even the right colour.
My plan is going to take a while to bring to fruition because I intend to totally
reshape the top surface to produce a new boot line to raise the tail.
My aim is to get an OEM look (as always) but at the same time give the car
another unique touch.
The original boot lid will be kept in its present state – so I can choose,
or swap or whatever.
Rigid foam modelling will be needed as will a one-off mould to produce the GRP skin required – so don’t hold your breath!
Below is the shape I'm working towards. The foam will be flexible enough to follow the curve of the top of the boot lid, which will remove any straight edges, which you never want on a car. The end result will blend with the rest of the boot and not be recognisable as a separate spoiler - at least that's my current thinking.

The above picture isn't my car, mine isn't a CSi. I had to find a picture of a car the right colour, from the right angle, with no rear spoiler.
